What is Acai?

Acai is a berry that is grown in the Amazon rainforest. They look similar to a blueberry but are a dark purple. Acai is a superfood and is loaded with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and heart-healthy fats.

Where can I buy Acai?

Most grocery stores sell acai frozen packets. Just look where the frozen fruit is. Or you can purchase acai packets from Amazon.

Acai Berry Bowl Ingredients:

To make this yummy acai berry bowl, here are the ingredients. You can mix in different fruits if you’d like and create your own Acai bowl, but the main ingredient you need is the Acai.
  • Frozen acai puree: Found in most grocery stores. I buy mine at Harmons or Smiths. Sometimes Costco sells them.
  • Banana
  • Frozen mixed berries
  • Water or Almond milk
  • Toppings ideas: homemade granola, coconut flakes, honey, chia seed coconut pudding, fresh bananas, berries, hemp seeds, and more.

How to blend the perfect acai bowl

    • Add liquid first and then your ingredients: This helps so your frozen fruit doesn’t get stuck in the blades of the blender.
    • Use frozen fruit: This is so important to make a good thick smoothie is using frozen fruit. Without it, the smoothie goes more watery. If you only have fresh fruit, use less water and slowly add in more if too thick.
    • Use a high-power blender: I love using my Blendtec. It’s amazing how well it blends everything together.
    • Use the smoothie button on the blender: The smoothie button starts blending at a low speed and then increases while it’s blending so it doesn’t over-blend it.

    Acai bowl topping/add-in ideas.

Enhance your acai bowl with any of these nutritious ingredients to add more health benefits to your bowl.

    • Chia seeds: These tiny little seeds add so much fiber and healthy fats. I love adding a tablespoon or two to my smoothies. Or make chia seed pudding to add on top.
    • Spinach or kale: I love to blend some leafy greens into my acai bowl because you can’t taste it at all but it adds an extra dose of vitamins, fiber, and other amazing nutrients. Plus – it’s an easy way to get vegetables in.
    • Flaxseeds: Great to add a boost of fiber and minerals. A tablespoon is a perfect amount to add on top or blend.
    • Hemp seeds: If you want a boost of healthy fats, omegas, and minerals add a tablespoon of this to your bowl.
    • Vital Protein Collagen: Add in a scoop of this if you want a boost of vitamins that help your skin, hair, nails, joints, and digestive system.
    • Greek yogurt: Easy way to boost your protein by adding in a 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt.
